The Experience Singapore Week in Suzhou - Singapore?Shiok?Lah, an event jointly organized by the Ministry of Trade and Industry of Singapore and the People’s Government of Suzhou of East China’s Jiangsu province, kicked off in SIP on July 11, offering people in Suzhou a variety of ways to learn about Singapore over the following five days.

The event was one of a series of events designed to celebrate the 30th anniversary of SIP’s inception, and was expected to enhance the friendship between Chinese and Singaporean people. It attracted more than 100,000 people who were interested in the food, culture and brands of Singapore.

The Peranakan cuisine or Nyonya food is a quintessential and unique part of Singapore’s food culture. During the event, the Nyonya Kuih, which was captivatingly colorful, scrumptiously sweet and strikingly shaped, attracted many people.

The golden “Kueh Pie Tee” was another specialty from Singapore. It is composed of a thin, crispy pastry shell that is stuffed with a variety of vegetables and a mix of spices. There were also many other kinds of Singaporean dishes and food products.

In addition to food, a host of brands from Singapore gathered at the event. Suns Singapore, a refined lifestyle brand inspired by the Peranakan culture, offered exquisite fragrances, porcelain ware and ornaments...

The friendship between Suzhou and Singapore has been continuously reinforced since the cooperation in the development of SIP was launched 30 years ago. Three months ago, the “Meet Suzhou in Singapore” Culture Week held in Singapore drove a craze for the culture of the region south of the Yangtze River. It incorporated poetry and photography exhibitions, performances, food and other components to help Singaporean people know better about the culture of Suzhou and its neighboring areas.

Like the “Meet Suzhou in Singapore” Culture Week, the Experience Singapore Week in Suzhou increased Suzhou citizens’ interest in Singaporean culture.

There was an interactive zone where the visitors could color the pictures of Singapore’s landmark projects, get henna tattoos, and try a “time travel” through the AI equipment...

Dazzling food products from Singapore shown at the food fair

The food fair held at Suzhou Center gathered the best-loved food brands of Singapore. The dazzling food products deeply impressed the visitors.

The booth of Kim Guan Guan Coffee, a traditional coffee brand of Singapore, attracted lots of coffee lovers.

“In Singapore, coffee is called ‘kopi’. The Singaporeans like starting a day with a cup of coffee. Our coffee beans are stir-fried with sugar, salt and butter so that the coffee has a strong aroma but no astringency,” the staff enthusiastically gave introductions to the guests.

Kacang puteh, an assorted mix of nuts and snacks, were sold on a small cart pushed here and there by the vendor. Roasted green soya beans, white peanuts, chickpeas and other ingredients were served in a paper cone.

Kacang puteh directly translates to “white nuts”. Its history actually goes all the way back to the 1940s, where British immigrants brought migrant laborers to Malaya from Tamil Nadu. Later, the laborers set up stands along the streets, selling these chickpeas along with a whole array of delicious Indian snacks...[MORE]
